Direct Debit for personal trainers: how it works
6 min read · Updated 19 October 2026
Direct Debit takes a monthly plan straight from a client's bank account. You stop asking for money each month, and clients don't have to remember to pay.
When Direct Debit suits you
- You sell monthly plans, such as 8 sessions a month, or online coaching with a check-in call.
- Your clients are in the UK and pay in pounds. Bacs Direct Debit only works for UK bank accounts.
- Clients stay for months, so a payment that runs by itself saves you both time.
For one-off packs, a card payment is simpler. Direct Debit is for money that comes in every month.
How clients sign up
The client picks the plan and chooses Direct Debit at checkout. They enter their sort code and account number once and agree to the mandate. After that, each month's payment is taken on its own.
Direct Debit payments take a few working days to arrive, so the first one clears a little after they sign up. Card payments arrive straight away.
Write down the rules before they join
- What the plan includes, for example 8 sessions a month and your programme.
- Whether unused sessions carry over, and how many.
- How much notice they need to give to stop.
- How pauses work, for holidays or injury.
When a payment fails
Payments sometimes fail, for example when there's not enough money in the account. Message the client the same day, kindly, and ask them to sort it before their next session. Most failures are a mistake, and a quick message fixes them.
Decide in advance how many sessions someone can book while a payment is unpaid. One is a fair limit.
Pauses for holidays and injury
When a client needs a break, let them pause for a set time. A pause keeps them as your client, and the next payment moves back by the length of the pause. Set a limit, such as up to 4 weeks, twice a year.
Setting it up in Coachfront
Turn on Bacs Direct Debit in your Stripe account, then tick it in Settings. Clients can then choose it for monthly plans in pounds. If a Direct Debit bounces, the plan shows as unpaid and the client gets an email, the same as a declined card. Clients can pause from their own account, within the limits you set. Coachfront is free to use and takes 1% on payments clients make online.
